Holidays in the 50s and 60s were taken in vastly different destinations to where we have been going to for the past ten or twenty years. These days we are used to booking a flight to some Mediterranean destination to enjoy the sun and beaches that are both plentiful abroad. But what used to be popular before the arrival of the commercial airplane is now having a resurgence in popularity with many families holidaying in the UK.UK beach resorts that used to be famous for their donkey rides and promenades strewn with sun loungers are now becoming one of the more popular choices this year. Obviously the cost of flights with all the added taxes and hoops to jump through just to board a plane has put many people off flying. Of course the credit crunch factors into this too but many families are happy to spend their money as long as they aren’t being taxed way above their budget.Does this mean that we have to compromise our annual holidays? Well not necessarily, obviously the climate and temperamental weather means you may not get the blazing hot sun all the time but in recent years the UK has had favourably hot summers, even if it is only for a few days. Also, since the dawn of the credit crisis many UK tourism boards have pumped money and resources into improving their facilities and appeal. The holiday parks we’ve grown up with have had a sudden renaissance thanks to more of us wanting to book holidays closer to home. Many holiday parks have even been so popular that they have struggled to fit everyone in to the extent that new hotels and accommodation is being built for next year’s crowd. As well as accommodation investment there has been a lot of investment in more entertainment and activities too. Many popular music and variety acts such as favourites from Britain’s Got Talent and the X factor have been drafted in by the holiday parks to provide familiar entertainment for all the family. Various sporting activities can the kids spend up their energy and enjoy themselves whilst there are plenty of adult focussed entertainment such as singers, stand up comedy and others. The whole package of a family focussed hotel or self-contained apartment, excellent and varied entertainment all near to UK countryside or coastline means that a holiday in the UK could be just the ticket for you and your family this summer.

In order to understand it and enjoy it all the more, we should consider not only its present but also its past, and delve a little more deeply into the idiosyncrasies of the city and its inhabitants.

Alicante’s mild climate makes beach-life feasible practically all year round. You certainly have a lot of beaches to choose from: La Playa de San Juan, seven kilometres of golden sand flanked by a road enabling you to stop wherever you want. La Albufereta, a quieter residential stretch of sand, protected by the headland of the Serra Grossa. El Postiguet, situated almost within the city itself, at the foot of the Benacantil Mountain, next to the port.

For scuba divers we can recommend the shores of the Isla de Tabarca off the coast.

A seaport down to its bedrock, gastronomy in Alicante is closely linked to the Mediterranean, with the additional importance of rice in combination with fish being the basis of Alicante’s cuisine. In mentioning some of these rice dishes, the first and foremost is the rice a la alicantina, using chicken and rice as basic ingredients. Also of note is the caldero (stewed with fish), el arroz a banda (rice in fish broth), el arroz con costra (rice with baked egg on top), arroz negro (with squid in its own ink).

Additionally forming part of Alicante’s culinary stock are its salted seafood preparations, known as salazones, including mojama (tuna roe), bacalao (cod), huevas (roe), pulpo seco (dried octopus), anchoas (anchovies) and melva (which is similar to bonito roe). These are all good tapas before a meal or as a starter, usually offered in the now fashionable presentation of the montadito, i.e. “mounted” on a small slice of toasted bread.

When looking for your perfect accommodation, you are probably best off searching the Internet for your accommodation, whether it is a house rental, a self catering apartment or whatever you are looking for, as you tend to get the best deals that way.

Whether you are looking for a long or short term rental, you should be able to find your ideal villa rental in Alicante.

Depending on how many you need the rental property to cater for will determine the type of vacation rental property you will need to look for.

Alicante has a fantastic location between the mountains and the sea which provides the city with a special kind of beauty.
It’s a city with three thousand years of history behind it. In order to understand it and enjoy it all the more, we should consider not only its present but also its past, and delve a little more deeply into the idiosyncrasies of the city and its inhabitants.
Alicante’s mild climate makes beach-life feasible practically all year round. You certainly have a lot of beaches to choose from:
La Playa de San Juan, seven kilometres of golden sand flanked by a road enabling you to stop wherever you want.
So be prepared to try dozens of different, savoury rice dishes during your visit.
As well as boasting some great beaches and food, Alicante offers so much more. You can visit one of its museums, take a city walk, get active and do a sport (there’s water sports, tennis, golf and more) or do a spot of shopping.
Alicante is an ideal destination for a family holiday, as it has plenty of places to visit which are child-friendly – and there’s something to suit younger and older kids, too.
When looking for your perfect accommodation, you are probably best off searching the Internet for your accommodation, whether it is a house rental, a self catering apartment or whatever you are looking for, as you tend to get the best deals that way.
Depending on how many you need the rental property to cater for will determine the type of vacation rental property you will need to look for. Bearing in mind self catering accommodation will most likely be the best value. Most rental properties now are up to a good standard with all the basic necessities catered for.
Whether you are looking for a long or short term rental, you should be able to find your ideal property in Alicante.

The Costa Blanca in Spain has long been a popular holiday destination for UK holidaymakers. Most tourists arrive at Alicante airport before heading for the holiday resorts of Benidorm, Calpe, Moraira, Javea and Denia.

Alicante is known as the capital of the Costa Blanca and is located directly on the Mediterranean, although most visitors to this Costa will best know Alicante for its airport, but this lovely city is well worth a visit. Check out the sea views from Santa Barbara Castle, situated on Mount Benacantil, the top of which can be reached by an elevator set into the rock face across from Playa Postiguet.

Aside from the view, the strange rock formation is worth examining, which resembles a Moor’s face, as well as the Museo de les Fogueres (Museum of the Bonfires) where amazing figures created for June’s Fogueres Festivals are displayed. The CAPA Collection is also housed here, featuring examples of modern Spanish sculpture, including works by Dali.

Santa Faz Monastery is also worth a look, if only for the legend attached to the site where it is situated – a pilgrim brought a relic of the cloth which was used to wipe the blood from the face of Jesus at crucifixion to Alicante in the 16th century and by doing so, caused a miracle to occur…Visit the monastery to learn the whole story.

Museum lovers looking for something a bit different from the usual scraps of pottery and so on will enjoy a change at the Nativity Scene Museum, which is located in Alicante’s Old Quarter. As well as an interesting collection of Christmas bric-a-brac, the museum displays lovely nativity scenes from all over the world. The Bullfighting Museum also offers something a bit different from the norm – a permanent display focusing on various local bullfighters, with rooms given over to presentations and discussions on this contentious topic.

For a more conventional museum experience, try the Gravina Fine Arts Museum, with its collection of pieces ranging from the 20th century a far back as the Middle Ages. Alternatively, La Aseguarda Museum features a fine collection of contemporary pieces, from masters including Miro, Dali and Gargallo, as well as some non-Spanish artists.

Alicante’s beaches are also as good as any you’ll find along the coast, especially San Juan beach, which, with its endless 7 kilometres of fine sand and broad range of facilities, plus a nearby 18-hole golf course.

The city centre is packed with shops and restaurants, in addition to a number of shopping malls on the outskirts, such as Gran Via, Vista Hermosa and Panoramis. Eating out is certainly enjoyable in Alicante with a lively selection of bars, outdoor cafes and restaurants available in El Barrio and El Puerto. The two locations offer very different atmospheres, the old town charm of El Barrio contrasting nicely with El Puerto’s sleekly modern marina location.

El Puerto (meaning “The Port”) offers a regular service to Barcelona, the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, France and North Africa. The regular ferry and shipping services, rail and motorway links with Barcelona, Murcia, Denia and Madrid, and the international airport, make Alicante the gateway to Spain’s Costa Blanca.

Visitors are usually drawn to vacations in La Manga because of the beaches and endless sunshine. Tourists who embark on vacations in La Manga can’t help but soak up the culture along with the sunshine.
Visitors are usually drawn to vacations in La Manga because of the beaches and endless sunshine. The unique land formation of the La Manga strip has become a Mecca for tourists. There is more to La Manga and the Mar Menor region than sand and surf, though. The area is rich in history and culture. Tourists who embark on vacations in La Manga can’t help but soak up the culture along with the sunshine.
The resort area of La Manga Del Mar Menor is located at the southern tip of the Costa Blanca. It consists of a 22 kilometer strip of land which separates part of mainland coastal Spain from the Mediterranean Sea. The result of this unique land formation is Mar Menor, Europe’s biggest saltwater lake. At its deepest, it reaches a mere eight meters, making it warm year round. In fact, it can reach a temperature of 30 degrees in August at the height of summer. A typical vacation in La Manga usually consists of ample time swimming the azure blue waters while participating in water sports. Mar Menor is home to some of the world’s best kite-surfing, sailing, snorkeling, scuba-diving and windsurfing.
The history of La Manga Del Mar Menor is as rich as its terrain and natural resources. It was likely first inhabited by the ancient Romans, as indicated by remains and artifacts discovered there. The Romans highly valued the Mar Menor for its salt content. They eventually developed a lucrative salt-mining industry. Today, its salt is still mined and sold around the world. It is used to season regional cuisine, and its flavor is second to none.
Today’s La Manga is a mix of modern architecture and old-world flair. It offers tourists the best of city amenities like shopping, dining and dancing. At a closer look, its ancient history is still evident in its older buildings.
A vacation in La Manga means that tourists are strategically located near other rich historical areas. Two in particular, Cartagena and Murcia, are well worth the half day’s drive from La Manga Del Mar Menor. Both have distinctive cultures and are significant cities in Spain’s history.
Murcia is the capital city of the region of Murcia. It rests in a low-lying and fertile plain famous for its vineyards. It is known for its production of fine wine. Murcia is actually home to three different denominations of origin for wine: Bullas, Jumilla and Yecla.
Visitors can tour one of its many wineries and sample some of Murcia’s best vintages. It is also a renowned bullfighting city. Visitors can learn more about bullfighting history at the Bullfighting Museum of Murcia. Cap the visit off by taking in a bullfight for a truly authentic experience. Murcia is also home to centuries-old cathedrals and plazas for further exploration of the city’s history.
Cartagena’s history is largely centered around its longstanding naval port. It is home to the Naval Museum as well as the famous National Museum for Underwater Archeology.
An abundance of ancient ruins have been uncovered in Cartagena. They attest to its military significance, as well as its importance as a port. Some of these ruins can be viewed close up. Many artifacts are housed in several of Cartagena’s history museums.
A vacation in La Manga is an ideal way to combine the best in relaxation and cultural education. Perhaps this is why so many who vacation in La Manga return year after year.

A lot more people are holidaying in the UK these days as money has become a major issue for some families. It’s not just that, flying to foreign countries has gone from being cheap and cheerful to expensive and treacherous with airlines going out of business stranding their customers and hidden charges and fines if you don’t jump through their hoops.Couple this with the wide range of activities and entertainment on offer at local holiday parks here in England why would you want to go abroad? The UK family holiday used to always be taken at UK beach resorts such as Blackpool and Skegness, with the beaches lined with deck chairs and many sandcastles being built along the waterfront. These days since more and more UK families have started holidaying at home at these holiday parks the parks have struggled to cope with demand, so much so that they are already investing in extra accommodation to avoid having to turn people away next summer! So where can we stay when travelling to these holiday parks? Well unlike holidays abroad where you have to choose either a high rise hotel or an even taller high rise hotel here in the UK there are much more options that are family friendly as well as being at a decent price. The hotels that UK holiday parks have fully understand who they are hosting, typically young families. These hotels have therefore been designed from the ground up to be best suited for young families, this includes many family friendly features such as wide corridors, cot facilities and even a children’s den with bunk beds and their own DVD player.Sometimes families would rather have self contained holiday apartments so they can cook in their room if they feel like it. Self catered accommodation is very popular for families as they tend to have separate bedrooms, a lounge area and kitchen and dining facilities. Many holiday parks are also caravan friendly for those looking for a holiday with plenty of self-reliance. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes though for when you fancy a night off to relax. Caravan parks are usually located right next to the holiday parks so you never need to travel too far to enjoy the entertainment and activities.

So there’s plenty of choice at UK holiday parks which makes it clear to see that holidaying in the UK has really come along and can offer much more activities to rival any foreign holiday.

Do you know that there are alternatives to the hotels and motels you use when you are about to go on holiday vacation? We all know about going on vacation, whether for holiday or business or even personal reasons and staying in a hotel or motel. Most of the time we stay in these type accommodations because we think it is just easier to find a room or we are just so used to this way of vacationing. But in truth using holiday rentals is a great way to have much more than a hotel room to stay in. When you start your research on holiday rentals you will see that you get so much more for your money.Holiday rentals come in a variety of accommodations. A rental can be anything from an apartment, a house, a villa, a castle, or even a farmhouse. A holiday rental is any type of housing, excluding hotels and motels that an owner offers to rent or lease to someone else for vacation time. When researching for your next vacation spot you might find a villa in Spain or a farmhouse in Portugal. The options are endless, virtually worldwide. There are rentals that are in the mountains, there are rentals on the beach. The research for holiday rentals is usually done online through the internet. Once you’ve completed the internet search for holiday rentals, the next steps are easy: you choose where you stay, whether to go to the USA or go to France or England or Italy or Portugal. Then you choose the type of accommodation, like either a villa or a farmhouse. There are other options you might need to decide with rentals that might include: do I need a cook or do I self cater, do I want a fireplace also, do I want a dishwasher or washer dryer. You might have to decide do you want to rent a car or bicycle or is the rental property near enough to the Town or businesses that you can walk.Holiday rentals offer so much more than just a typical hotel or motel stay. You won’t have strange people or families staying right next to you like you would in a hotel. You won’t have the footsteps across the ceiling at night when you are trying to sleep. When utilizing the availability of a holiday rental you get comfort, privacy, space (if that’s what you choose), along with the cost effective pricing that is usually available when you rent a holiday accommodation. The process of finding, renting, paying and staying in a holiday rental is very easy to accomplish. Most rentals can be found from one of the many internet sites available or might be referred to you by a friend or acquaintance. The entire process in most cases is done entirely online. Once you’ve found a rental company that you want to use, you check out what they have for rent in the area you want to stay in. Once you’ve made a decision, most rental companies allow online registration.

There are infinite options for holiday rentals in Portugal if you are looking to avoid the big resorts and tourist developments. Anyone in search of something a little bit different will not be disappointed in Portugal, as it’s easy to get off the beaten track if you do your research beforehand. One of the great advantages to choosing holiday rentals in Portugal, over a package deal or a stay in a hotel, is that it gives you the extra flexibility with where you go. Price-wise, there’s not much in it, depending of course on the type of property you are after. There are incredible bargains to be had if you rent somewhere with friends or family – once you’ve split the price of a week’s rental between you all, you will soon realise that this is the less expensive option!

Many people choose holiday rentals in Portugal because it’s a premier golfing destination, but if you are after other activities as well, such as walking, watersports, cultural excursions or just hanging out on the beach, then you can find it all here. Holiday rentals in Portugal are most popular in the Algarve, which is home to beaches and sunshine. However, this part of Portugal is also significantly more developed and commercial than Central and Northern Portugal, so if you’re want holiday rentals in Portugal which are going to afford you some peace and quiet, then head to these less touristy regions. Northern Portugal, which is referred to as the Minho, runs along the beautiful Costa Verde and up to Ponte de Lima. There are not as many rental properties to choose from here, but that’s what makes this part of the country so special – a chance to fully immerse yourself in the landscape and culture.

Where you stay for your holiday rentals in Portugal depends on what you are looking for, and on your budget. If you are trying to keep costs down, then you’d be wise to keep away from the big resorts, and head for the countryside. You don’t have to be far inland to benefit from the lower prices, and if you have a hire car it can still be easy to get to the beaches. The countryside is covered in vineyards, olive groves and wheat fields, and you can find yourself in a characterful little village house, or a rambling farmhouse, some of which will even have swimming pools.

When should you go? All of the holiday rentals in Portugal tend to be much more expensive in the peak summer season (July and August). The weather in Portugal is usually lovely from March / April through to September / October, so if you are not limited to the school summer holidays, then find your holiday rentals in Portugal out of season – it’s at these times of year that you will really get lots for your money.

Free reprint article written by Olly Symonds

Copyright © 2008 Olly Symonds.
